What concerns me is that the Republicans seem to want a government that only collects taxes and has a military and internal security agencies (FBI, CIA, ATF ect.) They don't actually seem to want the government to do anything else. There is a word for governments whose sole point of existence is military power - facists. The social part of our government - medicare, medicaid, social security, food stamps, EPA, Education and all the rest make our government safe - they balance out the necessary military functions of our government. They ensure that we live in a place that is not one where the government just wields a big stick to keep us all in line. I think that when they talk about "American Exceptionalism" this is what they should talk about - the ability to balance the need for security and the needs of the individual citizens.
